history In elections in 2000, the right-wing Freedom Party
came in just behind the Social Democrats, forming a ruling coalition with
the moderate right People's Party. Freedom Party leader and alledged Nazi
sympathiser Jörg Haider handed the leadership to Susanne Riess-Passer, seen
as less extreme, but the EU imposed sanctions on Austria despite the move.
The Danube flooded in August 2003, sanctions were lifted in September
because they were seen as counterproductive, and in November the People's
Party made sweeping electoral gains at the Freedom Party's expense...

of Vienna May we take you back in time for a moment, leaving
present-day Vienna and going back to Habsburg times, starting at around 1800
with the spreading of the Napoleonic Wars to Austria imminent.
Napoleonic Wars. Vienna was twice seized by Napoleon, first in 1805
without a battle and then in 1809 after a fierce bombardement. Shortly after
that, the Austrians won the battle of Aspern, but lost at Wagram soon after.
After Napoleon's final defeat at Leipzig, the Congress of Vienna (Sep 1814
till Jun 1815) restored the balance of power in Europe.

of Vienna Prehistoric times Archaeological artefacts found in and
around the city give evidence that the area has been populated at least
during Neolithic times (the most famous sculpture is the Venus von
Willendorf that dates back to 25000 BC). Favourable climate and fertile soil
as well as the near Danube river promoted these settlements.
